Welcome

Often referred to as "Mr. Jefferson's River," the Rivanna River is one of our nation's most historic rivers. Thomas Jefferson, himself, grew up on the shores of the Rivanna and later built his Monticello home along its banks. Sharing Mr. Jefferson's appreciation for this river, a group of Fluvanna County residents established The Rivanna Conservation Society (RCS) in 1991.

The Rivanna Conservation Society is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizationView of Riverbank dedicated to safeguarding the ecological, scenic, recreational, and historic resources of the Rivanna River and its tributaries for the benefit of the community and generations that will follow. We sponsor events and activities throughout the watershed, including river paddles, riverbank clean-ups, public education forums, citizen involvement programs, teacher and student training events, along with assuring a continuous dialogue with locally-elected officials designed to keep the health and protection of the Rivanna River at the forefront of our community's environmental agenda.

Our Board of Directors and membership is comprised of citizen volunteers who give up their time and talents for the good of the Rivanna. RCS is funded by membership contributions, personal donations, and corporate and government grants. Our office of support staff is located on the Historic Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia.

If you are interested in becoming involved with RCS please contact us and we will be pleased to give you more details.
