The Rivanna River Watershed provides the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, and Greene with an abundance of resources so important to our health and well-being. The River and its tributaries provide drinking water, waste treatment capability, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities which include fishing and paddling, not to mention its charm and beauty.-
The Rivanna has its share of problems. These images, taken by Billy Hunt and others, illustrate the amount of trash and debris accumulating in and around the river. You may let the slideshow run automatically, or select a thumbnail by placing your cursor over a number along the bottom. If you click on the gallery icon on the lower left end of the navigation bar, you can choose between Billy Hunt's images and those taken by other volunteers.
The Rivanna does not experience significant impacts from business or manufacturing. Even so, the majority of streams and tributaries within the watershed do not meet Virginia’s water quality standard for aquatic life. The pollution within the watershed is caused primarily from human activities, including growth, development, farming, pet waste and trash.
